In terms of both total Fulbright scholarships awarded and fellowships awarded per capita, Pitzer, Pomona and Scripps Colleges were ranked in the top ten liberal arts colleges in the Oct. 23 issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. With 15 class of 2009 graduates receiving the scholarship, Pomona ranked first, followed by Smith (12), Pitzer (12), Kenyon (11), Oberlin (10), Swarthmore (10), Vassar (10), Scripps (nine), Wellesley (nine) and the New College of Florida (eight). With a ratio of 14 recipients for every 1,000 students, Pitzer ranked first on the per capita basis, followed by the New College of Florida (10.2), Pomona (9.9), Scripps (9.4) and Swarthmore (6.7). According to the Fulbright program’s web site, the fellowship is “the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” Historically, the 5Cs have been well-represented in the Fulbright program. This ranking represented the second time which Scripps has ranked in the top 50 liberal arts colleges in this category. Since 2002, Pitzer has received more Fulbrights per capita than any other institution. In 2007, 28 Pomona alumni received Fulbrights. Founded in 1946 and sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program provides graduates, postgraduates and developing professionals with the opportunity to pursue research or teach abroad. The grants generally fund round-trip transportation, orientation courses, book and research allowance, and maintenance costs—determined by the cost of living in the host country—for an academic year. This year’s recipients from the 5Cs will travel to many countries, including Brazil, China, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Macau.
