Women’s Tennis Wins First Match of Season in 9-0 Rout
The Pomona-Pitzer women’s tennis team defeated Mary Washington 9-0 in their first match of the season. After three match rainouts in February, the Sagehens were pumped to finally compete on Wednesday night.
The contest began with singles, with #1 Jamie Solomon PZ ’13 winning easily, 6-0 6-2. #2 singles Kara Wang PO ’13 followed in her footsteps, winning 6-2, 6-3. At #3 singles, Arthi Padmanabhan PO ’14 pulled out a 7-6, 6-3 victory, and at #4, Nicole Holsted PO ’12 battled out a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 win. Samantha Chao PO’14 and Kristin Brikmanis, PO ’14, the #5 and #6 singles respectively, also won their matches. Chao won 6-2, 6-1, and Brikmanis prevailed 7-5 in the third.
In doubles, the #1 tandem of Solomon and Wang won 8-2. Holsted and Emily Kawahara PZ ’12, at #2 doubles, came through with an 8-3 victory. At #3 doubles, Chao and Padmanabhan defeated their opponents 8-2.
The Sagehens were all smiles after the match, with all players echoing that this match was a great way to start off the season. Solomon has high hopes for the team this season.
“I was impressed by all the freshmen who really stepped it up and stayed composed under pressure in their first collegiate dual match,” Solomon said. “I knew from the beginning of the year that we have a deep team this season, and our match against Mary Washington demonstrated that. I’m looking forward to seeing how far we can go this year. With the depth we have, I’m confident in our abilities to do some damage this season.”
Today the Hens will take on Whittier College at home at 2:00 p.m., followed by a match tomorrow at Occidental College at 10:00 a.m.
