Rubik’s Groove at Pitzer
Pitzer’s Groove at the Grove concert series kicked off last Friday night with a Rubik’s Cube-themed party, a beer garden, and performances by Sleepy Feet, Sporagmos, and Jake and the Weary Millions. A good turnout from all 5Cs, eclectic music, and hardy partiers made for a solid night at the Grove House.
Sleepy Feet, a Pitzer student band including a drummer, guitarist, violinist, bassist, and banjo player, started off the night with its unique brand of alternative bluegrass-rock. It was followed by the surf rock style of another Pitzer student band, Sporagmos, whose performance really got the crowd going.
Sporagmos drummer Nick Tagliarino remarked that the night’s performance “was the loudest, craziest, and most insanely ridiculous show we’ve ever played. To say the least, the energy was high.” So high, in fact, that excited partygoers started moshing, and a group of students was kicked out toward the end of the set for boogying too hard.
Once the mayhem subsided, Jake and the Weary Millions took the stage. The band’s chill reggae-rock jams, described by one Groove attendee as “excellent music to groove to,” fit Pitzer like a well-worn Birkenstock.
As for the theme, guests were supposed to arrive in garments of many colors and then swap clothes with others — the idea being to end up a monochromatic yellow, blue, or red, la one face of a Rubik’s Cube. While some partiers shirked the theme, others went all out. One confused coed even came dressed as an actual Rubik’s Cube, cardboard box and all.
“Everyone had a lot of fun,” said the Pitzer Student Activity Committee’s Sophy Cohen. “It was a good mix of socializing and dancing.”
The next Groove at the Grove is Oct. 14.
