Spring Fashion Preview

“Scatterbrained” is probably the best word for this year’s spring fashion. With everything from heart appliques to thigh-high slits, New York Fashion Week established that fashion is in the eye of the wearer this spring. Here is a look at some fun new styles that are prevalent enough, as well as sensible enough for everyday, to warrant some attention.

Remember those cute mini-dresses from last summer? Well, those hemlines are here to stay. And short shorts are joining the club. For dresses, floral prints are going to be popular, but don’t just leave it at that. Mix it up with bold solids and patterns. Try a high-waisted, floral-print skirt tucked over a striped shirt. Or, just stick with the floral print and add a bright cardigan or chunky bracelets.

Speaking of accessories, I’m thrilled to say that the headband is back, and it’s bigger and better then ever. The bow is a favored look, but structured--not Minnie Mouse floppy style. It’s fun and a great match for the floral print. The headband can be changed up of course, but try following the bow trend and experiment with feathers or jewels. It’s about light-hearted fun this season.

Another trend this spring is the loose, baggy look, which emphasizes comfort. Think boyfriend jeans that are worn and broken in, oversized tees, and sweats that have been washed one too many times. These pieces aren’t shapeless but loosely fitted. They should work with your body, fit the hips and hang off the shoulder, maybe show some shoulder or a little back. Along with all this comes the ever-so-wonderful boyfriend blazer. Try it in a dark, neutral tone or in tan, and then toss it over anything. A tee and jeans, or that aforementioned floral dress.

Finally, the most important trend of all: sparkles! Think preschool meets glitter, but in a grown-up style, which means sequins. Sequined dresses are perfect for a night on the town, and a sequined blazer is even better. Maybe add just a little pizzazz with a sequined headband or a scarf.

For the boys, apparently the boyfriend blazer is not just for girls anymore. Worn with a suit or jeans, the look is comfortable, so choose soft fabrics. As for jeans, the look is staying fitted; ‘80s might be coming back, but thankfully not parachute pants. Color is where things get a little hectic, so just pick what you like. Checkered print, whether on pants, shirt, or jacket, will probably be easy to find.

Besides the blazer, there are a few other unisex trends left to share. One is the ever-so-hip plastic sunglasses. This is an easy one-anything goes with color or shape. And on top of everything, don’t forget going green! I don’t want to call this a trend, because it was definitely popular before spring 2010 and will hopefully be popular for a long time to come. In the end, these are all just suggestions. So take what you like, leave what you don’t, and wear whatever tickles your fancy.
