ASPC Senate Briefs

Frick Would Like to Cancel the Meeting

ASPC President Eliza Finley PO ’09 called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m. after waiting some time to achieve a quorum of senators present. Before conducting senate business, Finley introduced a meeting guest, Than Volk PO ‘10. After prompting him three times, Volk admitted to his candidacy for the Commissioner of Communications in Tuesday’s elections. North Campus Representative Kevin Frick PO ’09 then suggested that all of the senators leave the meeting, since Associate Dean of Students Neil Gerard was not present, and so would never know if the senators left. Finley reminded Frick that Gerard does not in fact run the senate meetings. Finley’s first order of business was to suggest that ASPC run a budget forum to inform students about what is occurring on campus in response to the large interest in budget issues during this week’s senate election.

Please Donate Your Greasy Cheesy Money

Finley then scrounged for a container to collect donations for sickle cell anemia from senate members. After suggesting a coop sandwich box which once had her quesadilla in it, Vice President for Campus Activities Marissa Castro PO ’09 gave her an envelope. Finley then announced that the administration was re-evaluating the summer housing no tolerance for drugs and alcohol policy. Frick then asked senate if they would be willing to sponsor a staff breakfast with Workers Support Committee. Senate will be serving breakfast to workers in the next few weeks.

Burke Wise FAIL

Finley then suggested that senators begin preparing transition documents for their successor. She asked senators to recall the documents they got from the previous year’s senate. Vice President for Finance Ian Kwok ’09 loudly stated that he did not recall any such documents from Burke Wise PO ’08, the former Vice President of Finance. South Campus Representative Stephanie Almeida PO ’11 then introduced a motion to amend the ASPC bylaws to change the title of the Student Faculty Interaction Committee to the Student, Faculty, and Staff Interaction Committee. Commissioner of Academic Affairs Rhett Dornbach-Bender PO ’09 seconded the motion, although minutes later, Frick tried to do the same. Dornbach-Bender then also motioned to add the Commissioner of Academic Affairs to the Student, Faculty, and Staff Interaction Committee.

The Pomona Website Upgrades From 1992 to 2009, but only in Latin.

Finally, Commissioner of Communications Xiaoye “MD” Ma then reported to the senate. Ma first announced that there would be a media workshop for campus publications next weekend. He then went on to show senators a template for a new Pomona website. The new website will hopefully be launched next year, and will bring things like a “share this” button to make the website more Web 2.0 compatible. Frick asked if the website would remain in Latin. This reporter for The Student Life explained that Loerum Ipsum is not in fact Latin, but publisher’s placeholder text. Finley ended the meeting at 6:05 p.m.
