P-P Volleyball Cruises Past CMS to Complete Season Sweep

By beating CMS for the second time this year, the red hot Sagehen volleyball team pushed its winning streak to five games and continued its march up the conference standings. P-P now sits at 10-8 overall, with a 6-2 conference record—good for second place behind Redlands, a team that beat the Sagehens in a close five-set match. The most recent milestone for this team came with a 3-1 (25-22, 19-25, 25-13, 25-21) win over perennial rival CMS. For the first time since 1998, the Sagehens swept the Athenas in the regular season. After a series of down-to-the-wire matches, the Hens gave themselves some respite by beating CMS in four sets instead of five.Libero Heidi Leonard PO ’12 said, “It was one of the easiest matches that we’ve played during the conference [schedule],” adding that, in regards to the current win streak, she “likes the fire power that we have [been] building this year.”Captain Sarah Amos PI ’10 cited the win over CMS as “epic” and perfect for giving the team “momentum for [their] upcoming games in the second half of SCIAC.”In the CMS match, P-P got contributions from all over the court. Middlers Dana Kittrelle PO ’10 and Rachel Bollens PO ’13 led the team with a cumulative 15 kills in 32 attempts with no errors, giving the Hens a .469 attack percentage.Amos led the team with 14 kills, and Jordan Hammond PO ’12 had 11 kills of her own. Kenzie Aries PI ’12 had 34 assists, eight kills, and a .444 attack percentage. Lauren Kim PO ’13 had 20 digs, a match high. These performances spurred the Sagehens to victory.The team’s group dynamic has proven to be a key to the Sagehens’ recent string of successes. “The team is playing well together as a unit, and that is one of the main things you can hope for as a coach,” said Coach Valerie Cowan. “I am very pleased with the team chemistry and expect this to help us achieve our goals. We are truly playing as a team.”Aries, a setter, also noted that “it is really nice to see the team coming together over the course of the season. Although we had a rough start, we seem to be rolling now and hope to continue this trend over the second round of SCIAC. Teams aren’t going to know what hit them.”The Sagehens have a break from league play, but will resume at Occidental Oct. 20. The game should be a solid test to gauge the team’s progress this season, as P-P will have an opportunity to avenge its earlier 3-2 loss to Oxy.
